In the start of every new project there are loads of separate ideas and uncertainties that can sometimes lead to lost time and confusion. The best way to fight this is to sit down with the team using the client brief and debate, organize and write down things.

The best way to instantly visualize the web site structure is to do a site map. You can do it on a big whiteboard using a marker, in paper using a pen or pencil or digitally using your favorite software like Fireworks, Visio or other.

Having the visual site map will make you and your team visualize the web site structure and organize ideas focusing them on the reality of the project.

The site map is a great tool to make decisions. While doing and debating a site map you will be able to start making decisions on what development technologies the project will need, the navigation structure or where important functional elements will be placed.

You will be able to confront the client with the visual site map and have it has a tool of getting some doubts sorted out and make sure you are starting in the same level of ideas for the final product.

3. Reference

The time to create the visual site map will not be wasted. Besides helping you organize and start making decisions, you will have a great tool of reference. Having the visual site map always available to the whole team is great. Everyone can see the page structure and notes added to it which keeps everyone focused on what’s left to do.

Keep the site map updated with the latest changes to the project and it will always be a reference tool of the web site skeleton. Another advantage is having a great site map already built to deliver with the web site when the project is finished.
